ABOUT CHARLO BOARD

WHERE DID WE GET OUR NAME?
My best friend and neighbor insisted on calling my son (Charlie) "Charlo" when he was born, just to see my wife's reaction. The nickname didn't stick, but on occasion, I still call him Charlo, in jest. When I started making charcuterie boards, my wife's sister came up with the idea of Charlo Board, and we all agreed that HAD to be it! Charlie is six years old now, and as he has gotten older, he has started to make many more appearances in Daddy's wood shop. He could even be the one to sand or brand your board if he isn't too busy playing in his treehouse!
THE
WOODWORKER
My name is Matt Mellown. I'm married to Clara Bass Mellown, and we live in Andalusia, Alabama. We have a son, Charlie, who is the light of our lives.
I have been a teacher and high school football coach for my entire career, with my wife and I moving all over the southeast during our 13 years of marriage. In 2019, we lived in Prattville, AL, and I started dabbling in woodwork in our garage when Clara asked me to make closet separators for Charlie's nursery. When we moved to Andalusia in 2020 - during Covid - I had a lot more free time than I had ever had, so I spent many hours refining my skillset. In 2024, Table Matters in Mountain Brook, Alabama became the first shop to carry my boards. We now are carried in shops in Mountain Brook, Andalusia, Dothan and on 30A. This year, I decided to take some time away from coaching to focus on woodwork and to spend more time with my family.
THE
WORK
I hand select every piece of wood for its beauty and uniqueness. I want your piece to be one that is unique to you and your family and is an heirloom piece you can pass down for generations! Everything you will see on this website is handmade by me in my tiny backyard workshop at our house in Andalusia, Alabama.
